What Is Vitamin B12 and Why Does It Matter?
Vitamin B12 is one of the nutrients your body cannot make for itself. It contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal red blood cell formation, and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It comes almost entirely from animal foods — meat, fish, eggs and dairy.
Absorbing it is more complicated than eating it. B12 needs a protein made in the stomach called intrinsic factor to be taken up in the gut. Anything that disrupts that process can mean you are eating enough but absorbing too little.
Some people are more likely to run low:
- Vegans and vegetarians, since plant foods contain very little
- People over 50, as stomach acid production falls with age
- Anyone taking long-term metformin or acid-reducing medication such as omeprazole
- People with Crohn’s disease, coeliac disease or who have had gastric surgery
- Those with pernicious anaemia, where intrinsic factor is absent
An injection bypasses the gut entirely. The B12 goes into the muscle and is absorbed directly, which is why injections are used where absorption is the problem rather than intake.
Important: if you think you may be deficient, see your GP for a blood test first. Low B12 can have an underlying medical cause that needs investigating, and supplementing without knowing can mask it. We are happy to treat you once you know where you stand, and we will say the same thing in person.

What To Expect
Before
We will ask about your medical history, any medication you take, whether you have had a recent blood test, and whether you have had B12 injections before. If you have not been tested and your symptoms could have another cause, we will recommend seeing your GP before starting.
This is a short appointment but it is still a clinical one. The same assessment standards apply as to everything else we do.
During
The injection goes into the upper arm muscle. It takes a couple of minutes. The needle is small and most people find it straightforward — comparable to a flu jab, and over before you have settled into the chair.
After
There is no downtime at all. You can drive, exercise and carry on with your day immediately. Some people notice mild soreness at the injection site for a day, which is normal.
How Often
This depends on why you are having them. Some people have a loading course of several injections over a few weeks, then maintenance every one to three months. Others, particularly those already under GP care, have them on a set schedule.
We will agree to a sensible interval with you rather than encouraging more frequent appointments than you need.
Stretch Marks and Scars
Older, pale stretch marks and some surgical scars can be softened, though results here are more variable and need a longer course.
Tear Troughs and Temples
Hollowing under the eyes and at the temples. These are more advanced areas and suitability is assessed carefully — not everyone with under-eye shadowing is a candidate, and we will tell you honestly if you are not.
What B12 Injections Will and Will Not Do
B12 injections are genuinely useful where B12 is genuinely low. That is the honest position, and it is worth stating clearly because this treatment is often marketed as something it is not.
What they can do: correct a deficiency that diet or tablets cannot fix, where absorption is the limiting factor. People who are actually deficient often feel a meaningful difference, and that difference is real.
What they will not do: act as an energy boost for someone whose B12 levels are already normal. Your body excretes what it does not need. If you are tired and your B12 is fine, the tiredness has another cause, and more B12 will not find it.
What they are not: a weight loss treatment, a hangover cure or a substitute for investigating persistent fatigue. Ongoing tiredness deserves a proper look from your GP, not a monthly injection that delays the question.
If you come to us wanting B12 and we think the honest answer is a blood test first, that is what we will tell you.
Why Have It Done Here
A qualified nurse, not a therapist. Your injection is given by an Advanced Clinical Practitioner and Independent Prescriber with over 25 years of clinical experience. This is a routine procedure, and it is still a clinical one.
Time to ask questions. Appointments are unhurried. If you want to understand why you might be low, or whether the interval is right for you, there is room for that conversation.
Private and local. A quiet clinic in Burbage with complimentary parking, rather than a waiting room. Late and weekend appointments are available.
Honest advice. If we think you need a blood test rather than an injection, we will say so, even though it means you leave without booking.
Honest expectations
microneedling improves scarring, it does not erase it. A realistic target for a full course is a noticeable, worthwhile improvement rather than perfectly smooth skin. Anyone promising you more than that is overselling. Deep ice-pick scars in particular may need a different approach, and we would say so rather than sell you a course that will disappoint you.
Aftercare
First 24 hours:

Nothing on the skin except what we give you

No make-up

No gym, saunas or swimming

Avoid touching your face
Days 2 to 7:

Gentle cleanser and a simple moisturiser only

No retinol, vitamin C, acids or exfoliants

Daily SPF 50, without exception

Expect some dryness and light flaking around days three to five
Your skin is more vulnerable to sun damage after microneedling, and sun exposure in the first fortnight can cause pigmentation. Sunscreen is not optional here.

Common Questions
Answers to the questions clients ask most often before treatment.
Do I need a blood test first?
We strongly recommend it if you have not had one. Low B12 can point to an underlying condition worth identifying, and supplementing first can obscure the picture. Your GP can arrange this.
Does it hurt?
A brief sting, similar to a flu jab. It is into the muscle, so some people have mild arm soreness for a day afterwards.
How quickly will I feel a difference?
If you are genuinely deficient, often within a few days to a couple of weeks. If your levels are normal, you may not notice anything, and that is the expected outcome rather than a failed treatment.
Can I just take tablets instead?
If your gut absorbs B12 normally, tablets work perfectly well and cost far less. Injections are for people whose absorption is the problem. We would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need.
Is it safe?
B12 is water-soluble and excess is passed out in urine, so it has a very good safety profile. As with any injection there is a small risk of soreness, bruising or, rarely, an allergic reaction. We take a full history first.
How often should I have them?
Depends on the reason. Anywhere from monthly to every three months for maintenance, after an initial course if one is needed. We will agree to this with you.
Can I have this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Speak to your GP or midwife first. B12 is important in pregnancy but this should be managed through your maternity care.
Will it help me lose weight?
No. There is no good evidence for B12 as a weight loss treatment, and we would not offer it as one.
